MÉXICO VOLUNTEER PROGRAMS

1. Public Health Projects:
Required Spanish Level: High Intermediate or Advanced.
Project Special Requirements: Health Programs` volunteers need to have some proof of qualification as a health professional, medical student or nurse. Premed students are not considered into one of those categories.
Health projects offer a wonderful opportunity for you to familiarize yourself with the challenges and health issues of Acapulco and it can be a mirror that reflects the reality in most of the Latin American countries.
You will be there to help support the local doctors and nurses. Such volunteer work ranges from observation to assistance. Depending on your level of knowledge, experience, and skills, you will take care of patients, make beds, check blood pressure, distribute food and medicine, weigh babies, and help with other first aid procedures. Also, many hospitals and clinics run different programs on health education, basic prevention, nutrition, and sanitation, which you may be asked to help with.

2. Working with Children

Project Special Requirements: Not to use very short or tight clothes. Be very patient, creative and self starter.
The Children and/or Orphans projects aim to help children who live in poverty and not wealthy neighborhoods and give them love, care, and education. You will use your skills and love to help these kids become good citizens and productive members of society. In some cases, you can help the children get ready for school; help them with their English, drawing, and other creative activities. You can also help them do their homework, organize arts and crafts activities, and teach them social skills. By working with needy children, you will help shape the future of young people who otherwise would face serious struggles. Please note that specific details, such as work hours and the type of work, can only be determined by expertise, skills, attitude, and Spanish fluency.

Special Requirements: Love nature and animals. Realize that you are in a Tropical Country. Bring walking boots, raincoat, and umbrella.
Safeguarding the wonderful natural feature of Acapulco is only possible if conservation work starts at the grass roots level. Eco- projects focus on local cultures, wilderness adventures, personal growth, and learning new ways to live on our vulnerable planet. Volunteering for these projects involve helping to minimize the adverse effects of traditional tourism on the natural environment and enhance the cultural integrity of the local people. Our goal is to teach people and enable them to enjoy and learn about the natural, historical, and cultural characteristics of unique environments while preserving the integrity of those sites and stimulating the economic development opportunities in local communities.
Work includes gardening around lodges, making signs for the already existing trails, helping with the construction of different infrastructure needed in the parks, and participating in related project jobs.
Conservation volunteers for the Protected Areas aim to help with the construction and cleaning of the trials. These Protected Areas serve as educational centers for the community and also attract a lot of tourist almost every day. Moreover, the projects also focus on the development of environmental education for children and the community, and establishment of different sustainable systems to guarantee conservation of flora, fauna and water resources in the areas.

4. Teaching Projects.

Project Special Requirements: Be very creative and patient, not to use very short or tight clothes.
Tourism is one of the largest industries in Acapulco, and with so many English-speaking tourists visiting the country; it is a great advantage for Acapulco’s students to be able to speak English. Quite often, the Educative Institutions cannot afford to have an English teacher, though their students are eager to learn.
In this project, you will contribute your time and energy to working with students. Your duties will be to teach Basic English to them. You might also be asked to help with games, drawing, and other creative activities, as well help students that are not doing very well at school and need some extra help that you can provide and as a teacher’s assistant you will have to do the tasks that the teacher on your charge gives you.
In each class, there will be about 35 students and very scarce resources; these students lack pens, pencils, paper, etc. Consequently, they need you to possess creative skills to compensate for the lack of materials. Volunteers for this placement must be highly motivated “self-starters” who are able to work independently.
