General Spanish Language Program

Is an intense but simple Spanish language review. This course includes Spanish grammar rules, emphasis on pronunciation for increased ease of conversation and allows for practice time for verbal and written Spanish. The goal of this program is to provide the student with basic language skills and functional fluency.

1. Latin Culture 101:

In addition to the General Spanish Language Program, Latin Culture 101 includes 2 more hours of cultural lessons. These lessons include Latin dance, Costa Rican cooking, history and art.

2. Sports and Athletics: This program offers you the opportunity to study Spanish and practice different sports through athletic exchanges. If available, A4V may even be able to offer students with the opportunity to play with a Costa Rican team. Also students have the opportunity to go and see sports games. This program includes extra lessons to teach students the vocabulary and language expressions concurrent with their sport of choice.

3. Nature Lovers: This program includes the General Spanish Language Program plus visits to various national parks. Some excursions include Lankaster Gardens, Fabio Baudrit Agro-Ecological Experimental Station, Simon Bolivar Zoo, Irazu and Poas Volcanoes and others. The students will be asked to write reports about their visits to turn into their Spanish professors.

4. Single’s Retreat: This program includes the General Spanish Language Program and a variety of different activities for singles! Some activities will take place at our campus and some will include excursions to fun and exciting places in Costa Rica.

5. Golden Days: This program is a fun filled time for senior citizens. It is filled with Spanish lessons (9hrs), 2 visits per week to museums, art galleries, fun sites, restaurants, etc. This program is for those people who know how to enjoy life. We can also advise you on how to retire and invest in Costa Rica.

Spanish Language Professional Programs

Grade and High School educators 
This course offers educators information about Latin American culture that will allow them first hand experience and new insights on how to enrich their lessons at home. This program also educators to strengthen their ability to communicate with Latino parents and students.

Medical Professionals 
This course combines the regular Spanish immersion program with medical specific vocabulary and cultural training. This program also allows medical professionals to develop skills and knowledge that will enhance their effectiveness with Spanish speaking patients. 

Environmental Sciences
This is a Spanish language program that includes an emphasis on hands-on environmental work in the field. The course focuses on learning science terminology in Spanish which is beneficial to any work in the field.

Business Spanish 
This program is designed to enable students to communicate both verbally and in writing in a business setting with focus given to social and cultural aspects.

Flight and Airport staff 
This program incorporates the Spanish language course and vocabulary and cultural lessons to assist professional who work in the flight and airport industry. Emphasis is given to conversation and comprehension.

Veterinary Spanish
This program is designed to help students gain working knowledge of Spanish as it pertains to veterinary, farm or ranch life. This course focuses on practical everyday Spanish in an animal science setting.

Social Workers 
This program has been especially designed for social workers who work with Latino families. The program incorporates elements of an intensive immersion approach to language instruction with non-traditional content, careful screening vocabulary and attention to group dynamics.

SPANISH SPECIAL PROGRAMS

1. High School Students Program. It offers to high school students the opportunity to study and travel overseas, staying with host families by themselves or in little groups. The program helps young people to acquire a fair knowledge of foreign life, while they are learning Spanish and having fun.

2. Kids Program. A4V offers a children’s curriculum that challenges and encourages children from 6 to 15 years old. The course is a combination of hands-on activities, vocabulary- building, songs, and also games and grammar instruction. For children under than 6 just let us know and we can find a nanny to take care of them.

3. Christmas Program. This course is designed to immerse students in Spanish language and Costa Rican culture and traditions during Christmas celebrations, through classes, excursions and cultural activities (20 classes per week). Immersion in Spanish Christmas – visits to typical Spanish Nativity scenes, activities introducing typical Spanish customs and traditions. 4. Christian Spanish Programs. A4V is not only offering just a course in the Spanish language, the Spanish program also develops a Christian perspective on Hispanic culture, history, and literature, as well as the opportunity to study and live abroad. Students are provided with sufficient knowledge, training, and practical experience to be able to communicate with Spanish speaking people.

A seminar that allows you to learn basic Spanish skills as well as assuring a strong grasp on the knowledge needed to teach English as a foreign language.

THE SEMINAR AT A GLANCE

The course consists of two parts.

The first part: Spanish course (Foreign Language Experience). The trainees receive training in an unknown foreign language to reflect on the experience of being a learner, and how this might direct their own teaching. The school will appraise the level for each student and provide an appropriate course of instruction. This period includes grammar structures, special conversation, and cultural activities.
During this part you will visit the Colonial Historic City of Heredia, Heredia Central Market, and also you will learn with the Latino Dancing & Cooking Lessons!

The second part of the program is focused on the Teaching English experience. TEFL International’s TESOL certificate is a four week, 120 hours intensive course, teaching students how to teach English as a second language.

LANGUAGE AWARENESS: Grammar. Inputs cover word classes, simple sentence elements, complex sentences and clauses, verb time and tense, aspect and conditionals and modals, phrasal and voice.
Phonology. Input cover phonemics, word stress and intonation, and connected speech.

STUDENT PROFILE: Trainees work with individual students on rapport building, error analysis and correction and addressing individual student needs. Three meetings with the students are required including transcription and error analysis of audio and written samples, culminating in a 60 minute session observed by a trainer.

TEACHING PRACTICE AND OBSERVATION: All teachers are expected to perform: 
- 4 hours of observing experienced teachers.
- 1 hour observing professionally developed video.
- 12 hours of peer observation.
- 1 hour of shared teaching practice.
- Minimum of 8 hours of individual teaching practice.

COST: The program cost is $2,875.00 per student (Airfare not included).

Debido a que los temas a tratar incluyen no solamente la gramática necesaria, sino muchos otros aspectos importantes como historia y literatura latinoamericana, procesos de enseñanza-aprendizaje, paradigmas y enfoques de la educación, sociopragmática, pragmalinguística y linguística contrastiva del Español, y muchos temas más, este es, sin lugar a dudas, uno de los cursos más completos para la formación de instructores de Español como lengua extranjera.

EL SEMINARIO INCLUYE:

100 horas de capacitación en la enseñanza del español como lengua extranjera, alojamiento, comidas, transporte, material y equipo. El Seminario se impartirá durante un mes, con horario de 1 p.m. a 5p.m.
